Services & Resources for Distance Education Students
Who Qualifies For DE Services?
The Library considers students who are enrolled in UW-Whitewater online degree programs that do not come to campus for those courses to be Distance Education (DE) students. These students are eligible for the same services as on-campus students, as well as others listed below.
What Library Services Are Available to DE Students?
Andersen Library strives to accommodate the information needs of students and faculty outside of the Whitewater area. The Library will send books and materials at no cost for shipping to distance education students who live more than 30 miles from Whitewater, with the student covering the cost of returning items in a timely fashion. Students who live less than 30 miles are expected to come to the library for material.
Research@UWW & UW Request
Use Research@UWW to find books, videos, titles of journals or magazines and other material in Andersen Library and all of the libraries in the UW System. From Research@UWW, you have the ability to place requests for these items and have them sent to UW-Whitewater for pick-up and return for free. A UW Request Tutorial is available which explains the process more completely. If you need to have items from Andersen Library sent to your home address, please use ILLiad, the Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery request system.
Document Delivery & Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad)
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is available to all UW-Whitewater students, staff and faculty. This service allows users to borrow materials (books, photocopies of journal articles, etc.) from libraries outside of the UW-System. Students who live outside of the Whitewater area can request that the item(s) be sent to their home. There is no charge for shipping the item to the DE student, but the student is responsible for the cost of returning the item in a timely fashion.
In addition, our Document Delivery service is available to all graduate students, as well as DE undergraduate students who live more than 30 miles from campus. With Document Delivery, you can request scans of articles from journals and magazines owned by UW-Whitewater.
The request system, ILLiad, is the same for both Document Delivery and ILL. Be sure to indicate in the Notes field of your request that you are a distance education student.
The reference librarians provide a variety of methods in which students can reach them for assistance with research. You can contact the Reference Desk at 262.472.1032, which is staffed most of the hours that the library is open. Virtual reference is also available, with chat and e-mail reference available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We generally respond to e-mail questions within a business day. If you have an in-depth research question, you may want to contact a library liaison in your subject area.
Use this discovery tool to find books, videos, titles of journals or magazines and other material in Andersen Library.
UW Request allows UWW faculty, staff or students to check out material from any of the participating UW System libraries and have that material delivered to UW-Whitewater. Delivery is within three to five weekdays. A UW Request Tutorial is available which explains the process more completely.

Article databases available from the Library offer you the opportunity to find reliable information from respected newspapers, magazines and journals - all right from your computer, wherever you are. Many of the databases provide the full text of the articles, either in HTML or PDF format. We have the databases organized alphabetically or by subject to help you find the right one.
NOTE: When off-campus, you will be prompted to log into the proxy server, which allows access from anywhere using your netID and password, just like your e-mail. If you have issues with logging into the proxy server, please check our Troubleshooting page for known issues. You may also want to consider using VPN (Virtual Private Network) in order to access campus and library services. Find all of the information about VPN on the iCIT website.
If you have a particular periodical in mind, the Journals tab on the Library's homepage contains holdings information for magazines and journals the library has available, both in print and electronically.
