This page is designed to assist students of non-English languages taught at the UW-Whitewater. When using the sites listed below, in particular the dictionaries, please keep the following in mind: you get what you pay for, and most of these sites are free. For additional assistance, use the HALcat, the Andersen Library Catalog, to search for dictionaries, grammars and textbooks held in Andersen Library. For example:

General Language Resources

Comprehensive Classified Resource Directories

  • Ethnologue - Information about the languages of the world. Use the Site Search at the top of the page to search for references to a particular language or language family. One highlight are short reports about individual languages, including number of speakers, location, classification, alternate names and links to the 12,000 citation bibliography of language research. Bibliography is also searchable and browseable.

  • Collaborative Language Program - (UW-System) - Students can find out about the language programs available at UW system schools, including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and Russian.

  • Films on Demand UWW access only
    Films on Demand is a state-of-the-art streaming video platform offering access to over 519 videos on World Languages.
  • Humanities Full Text UWW access only
    Indexes, abstracts and provided full text for articles in archaeology and classical studies, art and photography, folklore, general scholarship, history, journalism and communications, language and literature, literary and political criticism, music and performing arts, philosophy, and religion and theology.
  • Humanities International Complete UWW access only
    Provides full text of hundreds of journals, books, and other published sources from around the world.
  • MLA International Bibliography UWW access only
    MLA bibliography is the largest and most comprehensive database covering scholarship in the modern languages, linguistics, literature, folklore, and drama, including film, opera, radio, television and theater. Literary criticism and literary theory are covered extensively. Approximately 4,000 journals and series are screened, and entries for books are included. Entries appear both for collections of essays and for their contents.

  • CEDICT: Chinese-English Dictionary - Free downloadable Chinese-English-Pinyin dictionary textfile for use with various dictionary programs.
  • Chinese Character Dictionary - This site offers several different options for searching using different dialects of Chinese, different alphabets, and English.
  • Chinese Characters Dictionary Web - This site uses a CGI program to facilitate the search for characters in over a dozen web dictionaries. You may also click on the name of a dictionary at the bottom of the page to go directly to it.
  • Pristine Lexicon - This free Chinese-English-Pinyin dictionary has over 150,000 entries. Five free searches are allowed before registration is required. Registration is free.
