  • British and Irish Women's Letters and Diaries - UWW access only
    The largest collection of British and Irish women's diaries and correspondence ever assembled. Spanning more than 300 years, it offers the personal experiences of more than 1,000 women and will eventually include approximately 100,000 pages of published letters and diaries from individuals writing from 1500 to 1900.
  • Early Canadiana Online
    A full text online database of more than 3,000 books and pamphlets documenting Canadian history. Collections accessible without a subscription include Canadian women's history, colonial government journals, English Canadian literature, history of French Canada, history of the Hudson's Bay Company, Jesuit relations, and Native studies.
  • Early Encounters in North America: Peoples, Culture and the Environment - UWW access only
    A collection assembled from hundreds of sources, Early Encounters in North America: Peoples, Cultures, and the Environment documents the relationships among peoples and the environment in North America from 1534 to 1850. The collection focuses on personal accounts and provides unique perspectives from all of the protagonists, including traders, slaves, missionaries, explorers, soldiers, native peoples, and officials, both men and women. 
  • Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) - UWW access only
    This database provides access to the full text of thousands of books published during the 18th Century, particularly in the United Kingdom. Subject collections currently included are history and geography; fine arts and social sciences; medicine, science and technology; and literature and language. By late spring of 2004, three more collections will be added: philosophy and religion, law, and general reference.

    This collection includes 71 authors and approximately 10,000 pages of information which provides a personal view of what it meant to immigrate to America and Canada between 1800 and 1950. It is composed of letters and diaries, oral histories, interviews and other personal narratives.
  • North American Women's Letters and Diaries: Colonial to 1950 - UWW access only
    This collection includes one of the most comprehensive bibliographies of women's diaries and letters yet published. It lists over 2,000 published and unpublished items from a variety of sources, including online resources and microform. Drawn from more than 1,000 sources, including journal articles, pamphlets, newsletters, monographs, and conference proceedings, much of the material is still in copyright.

  • University of Wisconsin Digital Collections - The UWDC includes digital collections from University of Wisconsin libraries for use by faculty, staff, students, Wisconsin citizens, and anyone else interested in learning about the state of Wisconsin. Also includes links to local library digital collections.
    • Belgian-American Research Collection - (Cofrin Library, UW-Green Bay) Information on Belgian-Americans in northeastern Wisconsin, including photographs, oral history tapes and abstracts, and select publications from the Belgian American Resource Collection at Cofrin Library.
    • Ecology and Natural Resources Collection - (University of Wisconsin Libraries) Includes writings about research in ecology and natural resources conducted by University of Wisconsin faculty and staff, titles in these fields held by the UW Libraries, photographs, and maps.
    • The State of Wisconsin Collection - Books, manuscripts, photographs, maps, and more are found on this site. Materials about the state of Wisconsin or related to its history and ongoing development are included.
    • Wisconsin Pioneer Experience - (Council of University of Wisconsin Libraries and Wisconsin Historical Society) View diaries, letters, speeches, and other writings of people in 19th century Wisconsin. Papers were drawn from the collections of the Wisconsin Historical Society and its Area Research Centers around the state.

Resources for Teaching

  • American Journeys - (Wisconsin Historical Society and National History Day) Contains accounts of North American exploration, including the words of explorers, Indians, missionaries, traders, and settlers. Rare books, original manuscripts, and images are some of the resources found here. Resources for teachers are included under the Teachers link. Examples are suggested topics, lesson plans, and nomenclature.
  • History Matters - (George Mason University) This site features an annotated guide to history websites divided by topic and time period, annotated syllabi for teaching history courses, examples of web-based assignments, and more. Teachers as well as students of U.S. History courses will find this site useful.

    America: History and Life is a complete bibliographic reference to the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. Links to some full-text articles in JSTOR, Project Muse, and the History Cooperative journals are provided; other articles are not full text. 
  • International Medieval Bibliography (IMB) (Brepols) - UWW access only
    A renowned database in its field, the IMB contains citations for articles in both periodicals and miscellany volumes (conference proceedings, collected essays, etc.) published worldwide. All subjects related to the Middle Ages, within the date range 300-1500 AD, are included. Geographical areas covered are Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.
