Need help accessing Electronic Reserves?

Andersen Library maintains both electronic and print course reserves. All reserve items are listed in the online catalog and can be searched by Instructor or class.

Print Reserves

Print reserves are held at the Circulation Desk and are organized by Instructor. Patrons are asked to provide Circulation staff with the instructor's name and item title when requesting materials. Loan periods are determined by Instructors. Items specified as 3-hour check out may not leave the library. Overdue fines for these items are $0.25 per hour, per item. Items specified as 1, 3, or 7 day check-outs must be returned by closing time by the due date. Overdue fines for these items are $1 per day, per item.

Fines for overdue reserves are $0.25 per hour per item for 3 hour loans and $1.00 per item per day for 3 or 7 day loans. Any Reserve items not returned seven days after the due date will be considered lost and will be billed for replacement.

Electronic Reserves

E-Reserves are provided (following fair use provisions of the U.S. Copyright Act) to facilitate and enhance classroom learning and may be printed once for personal use only.

Electronic reserves are grouped under the heading "A) Articles for Course..." and will be listed along with print reserves under the instructor and course name. E-Reserves can be accessed from outside the library by entering your UW-Whitewater NetID and password. Most E-Reserve materials can be read or printed using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Some longer articles or larger files may be split into multiple parts.

Requesting Course Reserves

Instructors may request that items be placed on Course Reserve by submitting a Reserve Request form, available online or at the Circulation Desk. Requests should be submitted at least seven working days before the material will be used for class. Instructors may place items from Andersen Library's collection or their own personal items on reserve. We assume no liability for personal items placed on Course Reserve. Materials owned by another library may not be placed on reserve.

To comply with copyright guidelines, all items are removed from reserve and all personal items are returned at the end of every semester. If items need to be used for multiple semesters you will need to notify the reserves staff.

All E-Reserve materials must contain a complete bibliographic citation on the the first page. Materials may be submitted in either paper or digital form, either as a Word or a .PDF document. Please contact the Reserve Department regarding the use of other formats.

To ensure the timely completion of your Course Reserve Request please:

  • Accompany the Course Reserve Request Form with all materials.
  • Provide clear photocopies
  • Include one-sided copies only (please no back-to-back copies)
  • Include complete bibliographic citation on the front page of all electronic reserve items. This does not apply to exams, syllabi, or items you have written that have not been published
  • Use the same title on the reserve as you use in the class and syllabus
  • Do not staple articles

Due to copyright concerns only one article or chapter from a book or journal issue may be on e-reserve at a time. Material which violates any of these guidelines will not knowingly be made available. In many instances it may be possible to link electronic material from library databases to e-reserve lists. If you would like an article linked to your Reserve List please provide a full citation (including database) in your request and we will construct the link.

The Library will place on E-Reserve the following:

  • A single chapter from a book
  • A single article from an issue of a journal or periodical
  • One short story, short essay, or short poem from a collective work
  • One chart, graph, diagram, drawing, cartoon, or picture from a book, periodical, or newspaper (one per book or journal issue)
  • A short excerpt (not to exceed 20 percent of the total) of a work which is not divided into chapters or articles

Instructors are responsible for securing copyright for material that is considered to exceed the bounds of fair use and submitting such evidence to the Library. Depending on the situation, it may be possible for Andersen Library to make the material available temporarily while permission is being sought. Andersen Library is not responsible for fees or charges associated with obtaining copyright permission. Once permission to use the materials has been obtained, evidence of that permission must be forwarded to the Library. An email from the rights holder granting permission is acceptable. Library staff will comply with the permission parameters established by the copyright holder.

Linking Articles from Online Databases

In many cases, articles from online library databases and journal collections can be linked directly from an instructor's web page, D2L, ROADS account, or E-Reserve lists. Adding the EZproxy coding https://libproxy.uww.edu:9443/login?url= as a prefix to the URL or URI enables materials to be linked directly from library databases. Students will need to enter their NetID and password to view the linked materials. Please be aware, however, that not all library databases can be linked in this manner. For additional assistance contact Erin Wetzel (262-472-5512) or Patricia Fragola (262-472-5673) or follow the directions at http://www.uww.edu/library/guides/directlk.xml.
