Air Handling Construction Work (Photo Gallery)

The Library's air handling system is under construction. Ceiling tiles, chilled water coils, piping, valves, and second- and third-floor lighting will be replaced. Work began on Monday, May 19th, and is expected to run for 12 weeks. The Library is open during the project, keeping summer hours.

Access to Services
Materials, including course reserves, may be checked out at the Circulation Desk (second floor), and assistance is available on the first floor at the Reference Desk & Periodicals Help Desk. Reference help via e-mail or live chat is available. Public computers with Internet access and Microsoft Office, photocopiers, microform reader/printers, a scanner, DVD/VHS players, and study tables & carrels are available on the first floor. The Area Research Center will remain open on the second floor with summer hours: 8 a.m.-noon, 1-4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays when the Library is open.

Access to Materials
Access to first-floor collections (Periodicals, Center audio-visual materials including videos, and Center children's collections) is unaffected. Second and third floor collections are closed to the public (Main Collection, government documents collections, Reference Collection, and pamphlets), and because the stacks are wrapped it will be extremely difficult for Library staff to retrieve materials from these collections.

Faculty and librarians pulled selected government documents and Main Collection books to the first floor for summer use. They are listed in the Library Catalog with the location "Summer Collection." It is possible to limit a catalog search to this location by selecting it under "Quick Limit." However, limiting a search in the catalog to "Summer Collection" would omit some accessible items from the search results:

  • The McNaughton Collection of rented fiction and nonfiction has been moved to the first floor (catalog location: McNaughton Collection).
  • Selected Reference titles are available on the first floor also (their location in the catalog has not been changed, so please contact a Reference librarian at 262-472-1032 before traveling to the Library to consult a particular Reference title).
  • Please note that some other materials listed in the catalog remain available because they are electronic, e.g., netLibrary e-books and government documents that are available on the Internet. Display the brief record for one of these titles and click on the "Linked Resources" part of the catalog record.

CLOSED to the public during the project:
  • Third Floor (Main Collection D-Z)
  • Second Floor (Main Collection A-C, government documents, Reference Collection, Reference Tests, Reference Curriculum Guides, Reference Microform Room, Pamphlet File)
OPEN to the public during the project:
  • Second Floor (Reserves, Circ Desk collection, Area Research Center/Special Collections/University Archives)
  • First Floor (Media Center including videos and children's books, Periodicals (electronic & print), ERIC ED fiche, McNaughton Collection, "Summer Collection," selected Reference Collection titles)
  • Electronic materials (databases, netLibrary ebooks, online government documents, e-reserves)

Request books or government documents not available online or in the McNaughton Collection or Summer Collection from other UW campus libraries via Universal Borrowing. This service is free for UW-W faculty, staff & students, and materials arrive in 2-4 working days for pickup at the Circulation Desk. If a desired title is not available at another UW library, it may be possible to request it from non-UW libraries via ILLiad interlibrary loan (costs one dollar per requested item and the turnaround time is a bit longer than UB).

Whitewater's public library, Irvin L. Young Memorial Library, also is open during the summer and its catalog (LAUNCH) is searchable online.

Questions? Please contact a Reference librarian in person on the first floor, via phone (262-472-1032) or e-mail/chat.
The reference librarians are available to assist Library users in identifying and locating materials to use this summer!
