Off-campus access made easier!
Microsoft's Word has been added to the e-mail room workstations on the upper level of Andersen Library. Bring disks! Eventually it will be possible to send print jobs to the laser printers at the Circulation Desk (cost: 10 cents/page).
More research databases available!
Biography and Genealogy Master Index (BGMI), an index to reference sources of biographical information, provides citations to other sources that provide the actual information, many of which are available in Andersen Library's Reference Collection. Name, birth and death dates, and source information are included for individuals in all fields.
- BGMI is provided via the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), a consortium of research universities which includes UW-Madison, as are two other GaleNet databases:
- Contemporary Authors - a full-text source of biographical and bibliographical information on nearly 100,000 modern authors, including novelists, poets, screenwriters, journalists and other nonfiction writers.
- Associations Unlimited (previously Encyclopedia of Associations) - a directory of over 80,000 national, international, regional, state, and local associations, with information on membership, publications, conferences, etc.
Gale's Literary Index, a master index to the printed editions of the 43 literary series published by Gale, such as Dictionary of Literary Biography and Contemporary Literary Criticism. These series contain complete biographies on authors and critical essays on their writings. Many of the indexed series are available in Andersen Library's Reference Collection.
- This database can be accessed from on or off campus. From the Andersen Library homepage, select the alphabetical list of "Indexes & Databases" and then look for the desired database by name.
Encyclopedia of World Cultures has been added to the Library's CD-ROM holdings. If possible, it will be added to the Library's CD-ROM LAN (accessible only from Library workstations). Otherwise, inquire about access at the Reference Desk.
PsycINFO, an index with abstracts of articles in more than 1,300 journals, as well as abstracts of dissertations, books, and book chapters in the psychology field, is available now via the EBSCOhost link on the Library's WWW page. Coverage begins with 1887. It is produced by the American Psychological Association, and contains the entire PsycLIT database, which the library provided in CD-ROM format previously. Switching to access via EBSCOhost enables UW-Whitewater students and faculty to access the database from off-campus computers with Internet access.
Science's Next Wave is a weekly online publication that covers scientific training, career development, and the science job market. Published by Science (magazine) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. It is a not-for-profit publication. One of the resources available from this site is full-text access to Science: Global Weekly of Research articles.
- Access to the complete site is restricted to campus workstations, though portions of the site are available from any computer with Internet access. From the Andersen Library homepage, select the alphabetical list of "Indexes & Databases" and then look for the desired database by name.
Three Softline databases are being provided to all University of Wisconsin System campuses via Central Investment Fund money from UW-Madison:
- Alt-Health Watch, a full-text database focused on complementary, alternative and integrated approaches to health care and wellness,
- Ethnic NewsWatch, a full-text collection of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press, and
- GenderWatch, a full-text collection of international journals, magazines, newsletters, regional publications, special reports and conference proceedings devoted to women's and gender issues.
- These databases are available from both on and off campus. When on campus, select the alphabetical list of "Indexes & Databases" on the Andersen Library homepage and then look for the desired database by name. For off-campus access, see the Library's "Off Campus Access to Databases" WWW page by following the "off campus" link on the Library's homepage.
