Collections: Moved, Renamed, Compacted

During the summer several collections have been moved around: The K-12 collections that were in the Media Center on the Library's first floor have been moved to the second floor, on the shelves nearest the east windows. These collections have been collectively renamed the "Curriculum Collection."

The Juvenile History Collection and the Story Collection have been absorbed into the other K-12 collections.

Curriculum Collection
  • Art Prints
  • Easy Books
  • Juvenile Fiction
  • Juvenile Non-Fiction
  • Kits & Games
  • Models
  • Textbooks

It is possible to limit a catalog search to materials in the Curriculum Collection by selecting it from the "Quick Limit" drop-down list on the Basic Search page.

All Main Collection books are on the third floor (last year books with call numbers starting with A, B or C were on the second floor). All Main Oversize books have been moved to the end of the Main Collection Z's on the third floor (stacks numbered 144-153, in the southwest corner). Previously oversized books were found at the end of every letter in the classification system, e.g, oversized books with call numbers starting with the letter D were at the end of non-oversized books with call numbers starting with the letters D-DZ.

The Media Center on the Library's first floor continues to house the videos, CD's, records, 16mm films, slides, and sound cassettes. During the summer compact shelving was installed on the east side of the Center. The librarians have been reviewing the third-floor Main Collection and selecting older titles that have not been used recently to be moved into the Compact Shelving. Their location in the catalog is Center Compact Shelving. This relocation will ease the space shortage for newer materials being added to the Main Collection.

Find It & Citation Linker

All University of Wisconsin System campus libraries have implemented SFX® software, called "Find It" in all UW libraries (originally dubbed "Find Text" locally) that is intended to help Library users determine whether they have access to the full text of articles listed in an online database after a search has been performed. Search results in most of the Library's subscription databases will display the Find It button. When the Find It button is clicked, a menu of service options will display: links to databases where the full text of a desired article can be found, links to the University Library online catalog if there are holdings of the journal available in the University Library's collections (click on the link to the catalog to check for the availability of the specific year or volume needed for the desired article), and links to other services, such as the ILLiad interlibrary loan request system.

One advantage of the Find It software is that if a user decides to request an item though the ILLiad interlibrary loan system, the citation information from the online database will fill in the ILLiad form. A click on the ILLiad link results in a prompt to login to the ILLiad interlibrary loan system. Login requires a 7-digit UW-W ID number and a user's last name. After the user logs into ILLiad, the request form appears with the bibliographic information for the desired article already in the different parts of the request form. The user clicks on the "Submit" button near the bottom of the request form to initiate the request. More information on ILLiad interlibrary loan is available at http://library.uww.edu/SERVICES/loanserv.htm#ill.

The Citation Linker allows UW-Whitewater researchers to determine whether they have access to a particular journal, magazine or newspaper by its title. It is possible to look for a particular article with its citation information. The Citation Linker will display a menu of options for obtaining access to the desired item--online databases with full text or physical holdings in the University Library, if any, or the possibility of requesting a copy from another library via ILLiad interlibrary loan.

Questions? Please contact a reference librarian (call 262-472-1032 or e-mail http://library.uww.edu/askwi/askwi.html).

Printing in the Library

The Library has fully implemented the print management system that was in place in the general access computer labs last year. Earlier this year it was in place only on the first floor at the Periodicals Help Desk printer, but now it is in place on the public printers on the second floor as well. Library users must note the number of the workstation from which they send print jobs, which appears on a sign under the monitor, e.g., L2102P07. At the computer workstation next to the printer (called the "print release station") the Library users must login with their campus e-mail username and password and the computer workstation number (the last two or three characters is sufficient, e.g., 07 or P07). Up to three print jobs may be released per login by clicking on the box to the left of each job and then clicking on the "Print Jobs" button.

Library patrons who are not students or staff of the UW-Whitewater must select the PAY AT CIRC printer, then go to the Circulation Desk to ask the Library staff to release the print job(s). Cost: 10 cents per page.

If a print job is not listed, users should return to the workstation from which the print job was sent and look for a small printer icon in the lower right corner. If it appears, the print job did not get to the print release station. Double-click on the printer icon and delete the hung job. It may be necessary to save the document or file to the desktop and then print.

For assistance, please consult the Library staff at the nearest public service desk (Circulation, Reference, or Periodicals Help Desk).
