Construction Work Completed! - (Photo Gallery)

The Library's air handling system was under construction all summer. Ceiling tiles, chilled water coils, piping, valves, and second- and third-floor lighting were replaced between May 19th and August 25th, which meant the collections on the second and third floors were literally wrapped up, except for selected titles that were moved to the first floor for summer use. As of August 25, 2003 all collections are fully accessible again. Come check it all out!

The McNaughton Collection of rented fiction and nonfiction was moved to the first floor for the summer (catalog location: McNaughton Collection). Because of the celebration of the Andersen Library's 50th anniversary, which will include a ceremony in the former McNaughton area on the second floor, the McNaughtons will remain on the first floor for most of fall semester. Remember, they can be browsed using the catalog (no pictures of the covers, though!), by doing a call number search for MCN.

Attention, UW-W faculty & staff:

Celebrate Scholarship & Creative Achievements

On November 25, 2003, from 3-4:30 p.m., the 16th annual reception celebrating scholarly and creative achievements by UW-Whitewater faculty and staff will take place in the Crossman Gallery (Greenhill Center of the Arts). This event, co-sponsored by the University Library, Crossman Gallery, and the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs, will recognize accomplishments during the period July 1, 2002-June 30, 2003. Refreshments, a bibliography of achievements, and a display of some of the honored achievements will be available. Please join us!

Faculty and staff interested in submitting scholarly or creative achievements accomplished between July 1, 2002 and June 30, 2003 should contact their department chairs for details. The guidelines also are available on the Library's website. The deadline for department chairs to forward materials to Sharon Knight (Andersen Library L1125D) is October 10.

The goal is to use this event to create a comprehensive record of scholarly and creative achievements by UW-Whitewater's faculty and staff. See, for example, last year's bibliography (portable document file - download free Adobe® Reader if needed).

Questions? Contact Sharon Knight (phone: 262-472-5515 or e-mail knights@uww.edu).

Area Research Center: Access Historical Documents

Are primary historical materials needed for your research project? This does not automatically require a trip to Madison! A cooperative agreement with the Wisconsin Historical Society allows the ARC in the University Library to borrow manuscript collections, documents, and other materials from any of the ARCs in the state (including the State Historical Society Library in Madison).

To identify useful materials, search the ArCat and note the location and call number of desired material. Then contact the University Library ARC to initiate a request to transfer the material, which will arrive in a few days. Materials must be used within the ARC office, which is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

For more information, or to initiate a request to obtain materials, please contact the ARC staff at 262-472-5520 or e-mail archives@uww.edu.

E-Reserves Articles and How To Find Them

There has been a change in the way articles on e-reserve for classes are listed in the Andersen Library Catalog. Students should search the Course Reserves section of the catalog for their professor's name and look for one record containing links to all electronically-available articles for their class, e.g., a record with the title "A) Articles for course 102 Freshman English." Students will not be able to search for the titles of specific articles on e-reserve.

Laptops and Wireless Pilot

The library now has laptops available for student in-library use. Check them out from the Circulation Desk for a renewable two-hour period. Four laptops were purchased with Student Technology Fee funds. The Library purchased an additional three laptops that are available for students to use in-house, or for faculty & teaching academic staff to check out for overnight use.

A pilot to test wireless access to the Internet is planned for later during the fall semester. Access will be from a designated area within the University Library.

Questions? Contact Brian Beecher (phone 262-472-5673 or e-mail beecherb@uww.edu), or inquire at the Library's Circulation Desk.

Librarians Help with Class Resource Lists

Librarians can, upon faculty request, help students find materials needed for course assignments by creating a webpage listing needed resources. For examples, see
http://library.uww.edu/GUIDES/guides.htm#class.

It is important for faculty & teaching academic staff to avoid having students pay for course packs containing articles already available to students via online databases, which they have already paid for with their tuition dollars. Many of the databases allow creation of "direct durable links" to full-text articles (which will work in BlackBoard and Desire2Learn), and reference librarians are happy to help with this!

Contact a reference librarian for assistance (phone the Reference Desk 262-472-1032 or e-mail http://library.uww.edu/subject/askwi.htm).
