What's New - November 2002

Database Cancellations

Databases available to UW-Whitewater faculty, staff and students are financed in various ways: a few are funded for statewide access by the WI Dept. of Public Instruction (e.g., EBSCOhost's Academic Search Elite), many are subscriptions paid out of Andersen Library's materials budget, some are UW-Madison subscriptions that other UW campuses "ride" (e.g., Contemporary Authors), and some are available as part of a UW System-wide electronic collection. Because of budget limitations and the rising cost of database subscriptions, some of the UW System shared databases must be cancelled.

The following databases will no longer be available as of January 2003:

  • Alt HealthWatch
  • Books in Print
  • Columbia Earthscape
  • Science Online & Science NextWave
  • Ulrichsweb (Ulrich's Periodicals Directory online) - Andersen Library may pick up this subscription locally.

It may be necessary to cancel additional shared databases later in the year. In addition, Andersen Library will be reviewing its subscriptions (online databases, standing orders, and periodicals) for possible cancellations.

University of Wisconsin Digital Collections

Among the 2001-2003 strategic directions for UW Libraries is providing access to digital information resources, including digitized materials from UW Libraries' existing collections. Visit the website of the
University of Wisconsin Digital Collections Center for more information about projects (which originate from campuses throughout the UW System) and how they are proposed and developed.

Samples of digital projects:

  • Wisconsin Pioneer Experience
This digital collection of diaries, letters, reminiscences, speeches and other writings of people who settled and built Wisconsin during the 19th century was created through a partnership of the Council of University of Wisconsin Libraries (CUWL) and the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS). Andersen Library's Area Research Center submitted the Uriah Hollister Papers, which consist of reminiscences of early Delavan and a very interesting letter about the trip from New York to Wisconsin written by his mother.
  • Africa Focus: Sights and Sounds of a Continent
This collection provides a selection of images and sounds that have been contributed over the years to the African Studies Program, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
  • Belgian-American Research Collection
One of the country's largest concentrations of Walloon-speaking Belgians is found in northeastern Wisconsin, resulting in a unique cultural and social flavor. The largest wave of Belgian immigration to Wisconsin occurred in the mid-1850s. This multi-media resource contains digitized photographs, e-facsimiles of books, and digitized audio from the Belgian American Resource Collection, established as a pilot project in 1975-1976 in the UW-Green Bay library's Special Collections Department. Manuscript materials and government records gathered by the project became the property of the Wisconsin Historical Society for permanent deposit in the Green Bay Area Research Center.
  • Great Lakes Maritime History Project
This resource combines materials from several sources: Milwaukee Public Library's Great Lakes Marine Collection (containing over 7,000 files on ships that sailed since 1679 and some that sail on the Great Lakes today), Wisconsin Historical Society's visual materials, UW-La Crosse's collections of inland river steamboats and river life photographs (among the largest such collections in the country), and UW-Superior's Lake Superior Maritime Collections Archives (LSMCA).
  • A History of the Crusades (Kenneth M. Setton, ed.)
A six-volume title published by the University of Wisconsin Press over a twenty-year period beginning in 1969 that was intended to serve as a collaborative and comprehensive treatment of the topic, ranging in time from the first 100 years of the Crusades to their ultimate impact on the histories of the Near East and Europe. The volumes may be browsed or searched by keywords.
  • Wisconsin Electronic Reader
Stories, letters, poems, illustrations, etc. on Wisconsin history, such as The Wisconsin Idea (1912) and John Muir's The World and the University (chapter 8 from The Story of My Boyhood and Youth, 1917). This was a cooperative digital imaging project of UW-Madison and the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.
