Library Events & Displays

Displays

  • Betty Friedan (Lobby, 2nd floor)
This display is in honor of Women's History Month. Betty Friedan (1921-2006) was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993. She wrote The Feminine Mystique, which challenged the idea that women achieved fulfillment only through their "traditional" roles as wives, mothers, and consumers. She was a cofounder and first president of the National Organization for Women (NOW). An interview with Betty Friedan is online at the PBS website.
  • Coming soon: Titles added to the library thanks to the Friends of the Library (lobby, 2nd floor)
  • Children's literature displays (first floor, in front of the Media Center, and flat cases in the Library lobby) are provided by students in the College of Education's Children's Literature course taught by Professor O'Brien.

sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

iCIT Small Equipment Checkout

Since 2003 the Library Circulation Desk had been checking out iCIT's small equipment including sound/filmstrip projectors, overhead projectors, slide projectors, slide trays, extension cords, tape recorders, phonographs, and rolling tables.

ICIT is now handling the equipment checkout via the Computer Helpdesk after campus faculty or staff (for themselves or to authorize students) first contact the Audio/Visual Equipment office (call 5531 or 5533).

What is BadgerCat??

Off-Campus access requires UW-W login.

It isn't really new! It's actually a Wisconsin subset of WorldCat, a resource that's been around a long time.

WorldCat is a database of shared cataloging information used by many libraries all over the world. Libraries can copy each others' catalog records and put the copies in their local catalogs. They also show in the shared WorldCat database that they have the titles, which facilitates borrowing materials from each other.

BadgerCat is a two-year pilot in Wisconsin to have a searchable subset of WorldCat that consists of the catalog records of libraries in Wisconsin. Not all libraries participate, e.g., the public library in Whitewater does not show its holdings in WorldCat and therefore it is not in BadgerCat either. All UW libraries are in BadgerCat and WorldCat. It is hoped that additional libraries in the state will join.

BadgerCat provides options to search certain groups of libraries in Wisconsin (called "scopes"). The default scope is "Wisconsin Libraries" which includes all libraries in Wisconsin that use this database for their cataloging records. Click on the " Limit to:" drop-down box to see other options, including "University of Wisconsin Libraries" and "Wisconsin Public Libraries."

If you do a search in BadgerCat and get the message "No records matched your search" you should try a broader scope in BadgerCat, or switch to WorldCat to search non-Wisconsin records. To switch to WorldCat, click on the drop-down box that displays "BadgerCat" or click on the "Databases" tab.

New Marketing Database

Market Research Monitor (Euromonitor International) - Off-Campus access requires UW-W login.

Market Research Monitor offers over 2,200 top-line market research reports on international consumer, industrial and service markets. Reports offer up-to-date market size data, company shares, brand shares and forecasts.

Four-Week Pilot of WorldCat Test Interface

Off-Campus access requires UW-W login.

For four weeks (March 21-April 17), the University Library is participating in testing a potential new interface for the WorldCat database. This test interface uses the FRBR (Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records) idea to collect similar versions of a title together into one super ("multi-version") record. The hope is that this will make items easier to find, rather than having to scan long lists of search results that include many different records for the same title.

Example of a multi-version record:
This record has several individual item records attached to it, including 6 visual materials (DVD's, etc.) and 57 sound recordings.

Example of multi-version record

You can help! Try out the test interface and complete a brief survey. The database provider, OCLC, will use the survey results to evaluate this interface.

The link "WorldCat (Test Interface)" is on the library's home page under the "Find Books..." line. After you have found and viewed several "multi-version" records a link to the survey will appear in a blue box near the top of the display.

Thank you!
