What's New - January 2002
Journal Holdings: Electronic & Print - combined list!
Previously, to determine whether the text of an article in a journal, magazine, or newspaper was immediately available, it was necessary to check at least two places: the Library Catalog, to see if the publication was available in a physical format in the Library, and the "Full Text Electronic Journal Holdings" online list of titles with full-text content in the Library's databases.New for Spring Semester: One-Stop Checking!
The University Library's customized list of journals, magazines, and newspapers that are available full-text in online databases has been expanded to include holdings information for titles that are available in print, microform, or CD-ROM formats in the Library's first floor Periodicals Collection. The listing's new name reflects its new comprehensiveness: Journal Holdings List. The list is alphabetical by publication title:
- Select the appropriate letter from the first word in the desired publication's title.
- Either scroll through the list, or search for a specific title by using Find in Page
([Ctrl]-F or select Find under the Edit pull-down menu in either Netscape or Internet Explorer).

Universal Borrowing Expands
Universal Borrowing, a service that allows UW-Whitewater students and staff to have books and other library materials from other University of Wisconsin System libraries sent to a specified UW System library for pick-up at no charge, has expanded to include three more UW System libraries. Participating campuses now include: Eau Claire, Green Bay (new), La Crosse, Oshkosh (new), Parkside (new), River Falls, Stevens Point, and Stout. Superior, Platteville, and Milwaukee should join the service before the end of Spring Semester.See the University Library's Universal Borrowing tutorial if you are not yet familiar with this service.
Overdue Notices via E-Mail
Last semester, the University Library began sending "courtesy" and overdue notices to faculty and staff via e-mail.Use of e-mail will be expanded in Spring Semester: Students will receive an e-mailed "courtesy" notice five to seven days before an item is overdue. The first overdue notice also will be sent via e-mail. Subsequent overdue notices will go through the mail.
Students, faculty, and staff may renew materials before they are overdue through the Library Catalog. Click on "Personal Record," log in with your 7-digit UW-W ID number and last name. Only one renewal is possible, and only if no other patron has requested the material.
Questions? Contact the Circulation Desk staff (phone: 262-472-5511) or Brian Beecher, Circulation Coordinator (phone: 262-472-5673 or e-mail beecherb@.uww.edu).

Electronic Reserves Improved
Due to feedback from students having difficulty accessing Electronic Reserves during the fall semester, Electronic Reserve files are now processed using text recognition software (also known as page capturing) in order to reduce file size. In most cases documents are 60% smaller in file size making it much easier to access from off-campus. Modeled after UW-Milwaukee procedures, we have found that the accuracy of text recognition is about 99%.Faculty now have the ability to submit Word and Excel documents via disk or e-mail for electronic reserves. The files are converted to PDF directly from Word and Excel resulting in incredibly small file sizes.
Faculty: Please see complete instructions on submitting Reserves requests on the Electronic Reserves webpage, or contact Nora Neumeister (phone: 262-472-5512 or e-mail neumeisn@uww.edu). or Brian Beecher (phone: 262-472-5673 or e-mail beecherb@.uww.edu) with questions.
Andersen Library Catalog's New Look
The next time you use the Library Catalog you may notice some changes in its appearance. No, it isn't a whole new system! The look of the Andersen Library Catalog has undergone some revisions, but the searching is the same. For example, the options across the top of the catalog displays have been turned into buttons instead of being text links. Let us know what you think of this new look.Online Resources: New/Changed Subscriptions
NOTE: Off-campus access to these databases is limited to UW-W students and staff (login required).
Alternative Press Index (FirstSearch : 1991- )
This database indexes over 250 alternative, radical and left periodicals, newspapers and magazines covering cultural, economic, political and social change. Also included are selected abstracts from research journals.
MagillOnLiterature (EBSCOhost)
Consult this Salem Press database for editorially-reviewed critical analyses and brief plot summaries of some of the most studied works in the history of literature. The database contains all of Masterplots and Masterplots II, Cyclopedia of World Authors, Cyclopedia of Literary Characters, and Magill's Literary Annual.
Nature
This site provides full-text access to the weekly publication Nature, and it is also a gateway to all eleven publications in the Nature "family" of international journals: Nature Genetics, Nature Structural Biology, Nature Medicine, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Immunology, Nature Reviews Genetics, Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology and Nature Reviews Neuroscience.
RILM
RILM will be temporarily unavailable Feb. 1-3, unless users come to the Reference Desk in the Library. Previously this index to music literature had been available via FirstSearch on a "per search" basis, which means the University Library had prepaid for a limited number of searches. This kind of access has been discontinued at the request of the database provider. Early in February 2002 a subscription will begin for the University Library. We regret any inconvenience caused by the transition.
In addition, the Library continues to subscribe to the International Index to Music Periodicals, which indexes more than 370 international music periodicals from over 20 countries, provides the full text of articles from some publications, and also features music articles and obituaries appearing in the New York Times and Washington Post.
Westlaw Campus
This is a legal database that allows searching for keywords or citations to find the full text of court cases from all 50 states and federal courts, statutes from all 50 states and federal statutes published in the United States Code Annotated, federal regulations in the Federal Register and Code of Federal Regulation, American Law Reports (attorney-written articles analyzing and summarizing an area of law with citations to court cases, statutes, law review articles, and other legal resources), and American Jurisprudence 2d, a legal encyclopedia.
