Part of the Wisconsin Humanities Council's statewide reading campaign "A More Perfect Union," this visit is jointly sponsored by the Council, Friends of the University Library, Friends of the Irvin L. Digital Collections

Links to the
University of Wisconsin Digital Collections have been added to the University Library's database listings and the Andersen Library Catalog. Search the Andersen Library Catalog for titles of specific collections (such as the James Joyce Scholars' Collection, Portal to Asian Internet Resources, and A History of the Crusades), or to see a list of the collections do a keyword search for UWDC?. On the Library's alphabetical list of databases see the collective entry "University of Wisconsin Digital Collections."

Many other digital collections are available, and in some states there are efforts to assist researchers and the general public in finding them by organizing collaborative collections of the digitized resources of libraries, museums, archives, and historical societies. Here are some examples:

How are we doing? Library User Surveys

During spring 2004 the Library will send two surveys to a random sampling of UW-Whitewater students and to all faculty and teaching academic staff to get feedback on how well the Library's resources and services are meeting your needs!

The first survey was developed in-house. E-mails were sent on February 2, 2004 containing the links to the web-based surveys. This survey will run for three weeks (ending February 20).

The second survey, LibQUAL+, is an international survey administered by the Association of Research Libraries. UW-Whitewater is among several UW libraries that will run the survey later this spring, probably in April. It is based on a business marketing model which asks you to select the minimum acceptable service level, the desirable service level, and the perceived service performance level of your library for a list of statements related to library service. The statements are generic and apply to different types of libraries. An advantage of this survey is that it will allow us to place local results in a normative context and compare local service quality delivery to those of our peers.

The library staff will greatly appreciate your feedback!

Periodical Cancellations for 2004

In consultation with academic departments and advisory committees, some periodical subscriptions have been cancelled. To see the list, go to
http://www.uww.edu/library/collectn/pericol3.htm. Among the cancellations are titles that are available full-text online through BioOne, Project Muse, and PsycARTICLES databases (Off-Campus access requires UW-W login).

Print Management System on Periodicals Floor

The print management system used in UW-Whitewater general access computer labs has been installed on the Library's first floor (Periodicals Collection floor). Patrons must log into a print release workstation next to the laser printer before a print job sent from a first-floor Library computer will print. For assistance, please see the staff at the Periodicals Help Desk, next to the first-floor printer.

Reference in Wells Hall on Tuesday Nights

A reference librarian will be available in the Wells Residence Hall Computer Lab on Tuesdays from 6-10 p.m. to provide assistance with research, citation formatting, database usage, etc. Please take advantage of this service!

Other ways to get help from the reference librarians:

Staff Change Affecting Course Reserves

Nora Neumeister is retiring from Circulation/Reserves as of February 6, 2004. She will be sorely missed! Faculty and staff needing to contact library staff about course reserves after that date should contact Deronica Goldsmith (e-mail goldsmid@uww.edu or call 262-472-5512).

Wireless Internet Access and Laptops Available

Laptops are available for check out to students and faculty and teaching academic staff. UW-Whitewater students may check out one of four laptops purchased with Student Tech Fee money. Faculty and students may check out one of three laptops purchased with Library funds.

  • Students may check out laptops for 2-hour, in-library use only.
  • Faculty & teaching academic staff may check out laptops overnight.
Laptops are checked out from the University Library Circulation Desk on a first-come first-served basis. Reservations are not accepted, however, a waiting list will be maintained when laptops are in high demand. A valid UW-Whitewater ID and a state ID or driver's license are required.

The laptops are equipped with wireless technology making it possible to access the Internet, library databases, and e-mail from the entire second floor and most of the first and third floors of the Library. Currently, access to the wireless network is restricted to the seven university-owned laptops. Later this spring the wireless network may become available to patrons with their own laptops.

Database News

NEW!

  • American Humanities Index (Ebscohost) - Off-Campus access requires a UW-W login.
Available until Dec. 2004, this database is a collection of bibliographic references to over 700 literary, scholarly and creative journals published in the U.S. and Canada. Coverage begins with 1975, and all journals are indexed in their entirety (cover to cover), including citation information for articles, essays and reviews, as well as original creative works (poems and fiction). Photographs, paintings and illustrations also are referenced.
  • Communication & Mass Media Complete(tm) (CMMC) (Ebscohost) - Off-Campus access requires a UW-W login.
Available until Dec. 2004, the CMMC incorporates CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association) and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Penn State) along with other journals to offer cover-to-cover ("core") indexing and abstracts for over 300 journals, and selected ("priority") coverage of over 100 more. The database also includes full text for nearly 200 journals, and some major journals have indexing, abstracts, PDFs and searchable citations from their first issues to the present (dating as far back as 1915). CMMC uses a sophisticated controlled vocabulary and comprehensive reference browsing (i.e. searchable citations for all peer-reviewed journals covered as "core"). The coverage list of "core" titles in CMMC is available at: http://www.epnet.com/titlelists.asp, and the complete list will be available in the very near future.
  • Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
The Directory of Open Access Journals covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. The goal is to cover all subjects and languages. There are currently 691 journals in the directory.
WATCH FOR CHANGES!
  • Educational Resource Information Center (ERIC) - Off-Campus access requires a UW-W login.
ERIC is a national information system funded by the U.S. Dept. of Education to provide bibliographic access to journals articles and other published and unpublished materials in the field of education. When Congress reauthorized funding for ERIC, funding was not provided for continuing the system of subject-specific clearinghouses, each of which had been responsible for acquiring, indexing and abstracting resources in its area of expertise for inclusion in the ERIC database. The clearinghouses closed on December 19, 2003. As of January 2004 no new materials will be received and selected for the ERIC database, however, materials already selected by the clearinghouses in 2003 will be added. In the future ERIC will be provided by a single contractor. Jennie Vano, liaison to the College of Education, has created a webpage to track the migration of ERIC clearinghouse information and services and the status of the ERIC database at http://www.uww.edu/library/subject/ericchanges.htm.
  • Library Literature will be unavailable temporarily for a change of vendors to be implemented. The University Library will subscribe to it via EBSCOhost.
  • MLA International Bibliography will be switched from the WebSPIRS search interface to Ebscohost during spring 2004.
  • Oxford Reference Online - Off-Campus access requires a UW-W login.
The Library's subscription has changed from the "Core Collection" to the "Premier Collection," which expands the available titles to include: Oxford Companion to American Law, Oxford Companion to American Literature, Oxford Companion to American Military History, Oxford Companion to Australian History, Oxford Companion to the Bible, Oxford Companion to the Body, Oxford Companion to British History, Oxford Companion to Classical Civilization, Oxford Companion to the Earth, Oxford Companion to English Literature, Oxford Companion to the History of Modern Science, Oxford Companion to Music, Oxford Companion to Philosophy, Oxford Companion to Politics of the World, Oxford Companion to Shakespeare, Oxford Companion to United States History, Oxford Companion to Western Art, Oxford Companion to World War II, and The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (5th ed.).
  • SPORT Discus will be switched from the WebSPIRS search interface to Ebscohost during spring 2004.
DISCONTINUED!
  • Book Review Digest (online)
This is still available in print in the University Library, along with the print index Book Review Index. In addition, many book reviews, especially more recent ones, can be located through other periodical index databases.
  • Essay & General Literature Index
  • Index to Legal Periodicals
Use the databases Westlaw Campus and LexisNexis Academic. Off-Campus access requires a UW-W login.
