What will be new: New Library Catalog | Music Periodical Indexes
arriving in January 2000: a
new library catalog!
All UW System campus libraries eventually will have Voyager Web-based online catalogs. Andersen Library's Voyager catalog will go "live" in January 2000. Many campuses have switched already--try it out: UW-Madison catalog or UW-Milwaukee catalog.
Music Periodical Indexes
During fall semester we will try out two online databases that index journal articles in the field of music: Music Index and International Index to Music Periodicals (IIMP). The former is the index the Library now receives in paper, the latter contains full-text articles from selected periodicals. Your feedback will help us decide which one the Library should select! The 30-day trials begin on September 15th.
Help for Graduate Students & Faculty
Reference librarians will schedule sessions with UW-W graduate students and faculty, to meet either one-on-one or with small groups (e.g., at a department meeting) for the purpose of familiarizing you with Library resources especially appropriate for your discipline. Sessions can take place in the Library or at other campus locations, such as a faculty member's office. Call (262)472-1032 or e-mail refdesk@uwwvax.uww.edu for more information.
ID Numbers & Off-Campus Database Use
If you experience any difficulties when trying to access the Library's online resources from off-campus computers, please contact the reference librarians for assistance at (262)472-1032. Be forewarned: during the fall semester the password for off-campus users will change from social security numbers to the new campus ID numbers. In addition, please be aware that not all of Andersen Library's subscription databases are available from off campus.
Collections Moved
Some of the Library's materials have been relocated:
- ERIC ED microfiche have been moved to the lower-level Periodicals Microform Room.
- Pamphlet File cabinets have been moved to the main-level Reference Microform Room.
- International Documents have been moved to the shelves immediately west of the Reference Desk.
- Federal Documents have been compressed into the first three sections of the shelves west of the Reference Desk.
There will be additional moves when new shelving arrives later this fall.
Library Homepage Redesign
Andersen Library's homepage has a new look! We hope it is pleasing and easily navigated. Please let us know what you think of it! E-mail comments to library@uwwvax.uww.edu.
Staff
Two reference librarians joined the Library staff this summer (Sue Braden and Kathy Schmidt left reference last spring):
- Jacob Carlson, who is coordinating the bibliographic instruction program, and
- Catherine Hansen.
Sally Koose joined the Technical Processing staff. You will see her working at the Periodicals Help Desk.
Kathy Schmidt, Technical Processing Coordinator, is on maternity leave. Mother and daughter Emily Louise are doing well and will rejoin us before fall semester is over.
New Online Resources
Academic Universe / Books in Print With Reviews / MLA International Bibliography, PsycINFO, Social Work Abstracts & Sociological Abstracts / Statistical Universe / WilsonWeb journal indexes & Wilson Biographies Plus
Academic Universe (Lexis-Nexis)
- This is a database with something for almost everyone!
- full-text articles from English-language and foreign-language newspapers (including the Chronicle of Higher Education)
- full-text articles from journals & trade publications (especially in business and law, including more than 200 law reviews)
- company information
- legal resources (court cases, codes, and constitutions from the U.S. Government and all 50 states)
- news transcripts (from television and radio sources, such as ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News, National Public Radio, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation)
- Roper Public Opinion Polls (select "Reference" and then "Polls & Surveys")
- accounting literature (the "Accounting" option in the Business portion of the database leads to "authoritative accounting literature" such as the Financial Accounting Standards Board interpretations, statements, and technical bulletins, as well as to articles from accounting and taxation journals.
Books in Print With Reviews
- This database is on trial until the end of September, and may be continued as a regular subscription database with campus-wide access after the trial. Until then, please contact the reference librarians for assistance at (262)472-1032. The database contains bibliographic and ordering information for titles currently in print and forthcoming, and in addition is enhanced with more than 300,000 full-text reviews from sources such as Choice, Booklist, and Reference and Research Book News.
MLA International Bibliography, PsycINFO, Social Work Abstracts & Sociological Abstracts
- The Library previously received the MLA International Bibliography in CD-ROM format, but it was available only at a single designated workstation in the Library due to its cost. PsycINFO previously was available on the Internet, but from another vendor (EBSCO). Social Work Abstracts and Sociological Abstracts previously were received in paper format. Internet access to all four databases now is available from both on and off campus.
Statistical Universe
- Government publications frequently contain useful statistics on a variety of topics; the hard part is finding them. This resource indexes the statistical information available in U.S. government documents, many of which are available in Andersen Library's federal documents collection. Also included in this database are links to some statistics on the Internet. Previously the Library received the paper index ASI - American Statistics Index.
WilsonWeb journal indexes
- A variety of indexes to journal articles, most with abstracts and some full-text articles.
- Applied Science & Technology Abstracts
- Art Abstracts
- Biological & Agricultural Index (no abstracts or full-text articles)
- Education Abstracts
- Wilson Business Abstracts
- General Science Abstracts
- Humanities Abstracts
- Readers' Guide Abstracts
- Social Sciences Abstracts
Also available is the Wilson Biographies Plus database, which contains full-text biographies from several reference works such as Current Biography, along with links to full-text biographical articles in periodicals. Access is available from both on and off campus.
