What's New - Fall 1998
Andersen Library has a redesigned WWW homepage and new, annotated alphabetical and subject listings of electronic periodical indexes and other databases. "What's New" highlights major changes in library resources and services.

STAFF
Kathy Schmidt joined the staff on July 1 as a reference & instruction librarian with subject expertise in business; she earned her MBA at Winona State University (MN) while working at UW-La Crosse.
Allan Davis became T&IR's Library Automation Coordinator on July 1, leaving the library technical processing unit.
Richard Blue, coordinator of library instruction, retired on July 17 and moved to Michigan the very next day.
Sue Braden was hired on July 20 as a reference & instruction librarian for fall semester.
COMPUTERS & PRINTING
Pentium/Windows95 computers have replaced most of the library's 486 PCs. Netscape 4.04 is provided for World Wide Web browsing. Printing goes to laser printers at the Circulation Desk and costs users 10 cents per page.

EBSCOhost and ERIC

In addition to Academic Search FullTEXT Elite, already available last year as UW-W's main general, multisubject periodical database (with indexing plus fulltext articles from selected journals), there are now additional databases available via EBSCOhost for 1998/1999, funded by a Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction grant to provide statewide licensing to selected research databases:
  • MasterFILE FullTEXT 1500
  • Business Source Elite
  • ERIC*
  • Health Source Plus
  • MEDLINE (since 1966)
  • Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia
  • Hoover's Company Profiles & Hoover's Company Capsules
  • Middle Search Plus & Primary Search (aimed at younger students, and their teachers and librarians)
  • EBSCO Animals
Database descriptions are available after logging into EBSCOhost; select "more info" options on the database list.

*Access to the ERIC database via the NOTIS library automation system will be discontinued. An advantage of ERIC via EBSCOhost is online access to part of the ERIC thesaurus information (use the "Browse Subjects" button after connecting to the ERIC database to see broader, narrower, and related terms to specified subject headings).

IAC's Expanded Academic ASAP

The library's subscription to this general periodical index (with abstracts and some fulltext articles) from the Information Access Company has been discontinued.

UMI's Newspaper & Business Databases

The Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction's grant to provide statewide licensing to selected research databases has provided funding for enhancements to the National Newspapers database (indexing with fulltext articles from selected papers) that was available last year. Access to more newspapers, including selected Wisconsin newspapers (such as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Madison Capital Times) has been added for 1998/1999.

Access to ABI/Inform, index to business periodicals with abstracts and fulltext articles from selected journals, continues to be available.

ACS Publications (Chemistry)

"Web Editions" of 26 American Chemical Society journals with full text articles, images (illustrations, structures, figures), and supporting information (beginning with 1996 issues) are available from campus computer workstations for 1998, funded by a UW-Madison grant. The link to this Internet resource is on the E-Journals listing from the library's homepage and on the library's chemistry WWW page.
After selecting a journal/magazine title, tables of contents from issues of the selected journal may be browsed, searches for authors, titles, or keywords (in abstracts or anywhere in article texts) in the selected journal may be performed (select the "SEARCH: Web Editions" option), or tables of contents for one, several, or all of the ACS journals may be searched for authors or words in article titles (select the "SEARCH: Table of Contents" option).

These materials are copyrighted, and use is for authorized users only. UW-W campus users may view, download, or print individual articles for personal scholarly, research, and educational use in accordance with the terms of the ACS license agreement. Anyone may excerpt up to 200 words per article for noncommercial, scholarly purposes with appropriate credit to the source. Articles and other information contained in Web Editions are not be republished in any form, re-sold, or otherwise distributed to others.

Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO)

CIAO is intended to be a comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs, providing online access to scholarship from 1991 on that includes working papers from research institutions (such as Cato Institute, Brookings Institution, and Carter Center), books, journal article abstracts (with links to journal WWW pages if available), foundation-funded research projects, conference proceedings, and WWW sites. This subscription resource is funded for 1998 by a UW-Madison grant.
The contents of CIAO may be identified through alphabetical indices (author, subject, title, and institution), or by searches for keywords. Searches may be limited by date.

CIAO requires Netscape Navigator 3.0 or higher, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.2 or higher for full functionality.

Files may be downloaded or printed for personal use. This resource can be used from any campus computer workstation without providing a password, and UW-W faculty, staff, and students may specify a username and password to log in from a non-subscribed location (i.e., off campus) during the subscription period.

JSTOR

JSTOR is an electronic archive of back issues of more than 45 scholarly journals in various fields, including anthropology, asian studies, ecology, economics, education, finance, history, mathematics, philosophy, political science, population studies, and sociology. Full text images of articles back to the first issues of journals are available. Note that the most current 3-5 years of each journal are not available.
JSTOR is intended for personal, noncommercial use; copyright restrictions apply. It is possible to read and print the articles, or to download pages as image files, from campus computers. It is not possible to cut and paste article contents.

Useful content can be found either by browsing the tables of contents of selected journals, or by searching for keywords (in full text or abstracts), authors, or titles. Searches may be limited by date.

Project Muse

More than 40 scholarly humanities & social sciences journals published by Johns Hopkins University Press are available online from anywhere on campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through this subscription resource, funded for 1998 by a UW-Madison grant.
There is no limit to non-commercial usage of this material by the campus community, including "on demand" unrestricted paper printing of individual articles for coursework, research, and personal use, so long as there is no external distribution of any kind.

Project Muse offers the ability to search citations or fulltext articles for authors, titles, subjects or keywords, either in a single journal, among specific journals, or across all Project Muse journals.

PsycLIT

PsycLIT, a CD-ROM database from SilverPlatter, now indexes and summarizes journal articles in the field of psychology (including psychological aspects of other disciplines, such as education) back to 1887. More than 1,300 journals are indexed. Chapters of books in the field published since 1987 also are indexed. The database is available from the library's CD-ROM LAN at most library workstations. Another change from last year is the software, switched from a DOS interface to a Windows interface. UW System libraries are investigating the possibility of providing this database over the Internet in the future. During September 1998 there will be a trial of PsycINFO via EBSCOhost; UW-W staff and students may inquire at the Reference Desk about trial login procedures.

STAT-USA

Andersen Library has a campus subscription to STAT-USA, an online database from the International Trade Administration which provides online access to the National Trade Data Bank (NTDB). It is now available from any on-campus computer without a password. Sorry, NO off-campus access is provided with this subscription. The library still receives the CD-ROM NTDB, which can be run from designated library workstations when the online database refers to data on the discs.

Women's Resources International

Last year this database was available as a CD-ROM; now Andersen Library is providing it via WWW, along with the Child Abuse & Neglect database. Both databases are available from any campus workstation, using the links on the library's subject WWW pages or the new alphabetical listing of "Indexes & Databases." Use is limited to one person at a time.

CD-ROM LAN Databases

Many research databases on the CD-ROM LAN have either been upgraded to Windows-version software (PsycLIT, Books in Print Plus, Ulrich's Plus, Corporate Affiliations, Advertiser & Agency Red Books Plus) or have been replaced with Internet access (Women's Resources International). Business Dateline and Shepard's are now entirely available on the LAN, rather than being split between the LAN and designated stand-alone workstations in the library. Some of the remaining LAN databases are still under (re)construction; beware. At this time access to the LAN databases is available at library workstations only.

FirstSearch® Databases

FirstSearch® is a collection of online databases, mostly periodical indexes. Andersen Library has an account with a balance of searches, which are purchased in advance. The account is debited each time a search is performed in a FirstSearch® database. In past years the library purchased small numbers of searches and reference librarians logged onto FirstSearch® for users only after ascertaining that other resources for which the library pays a flat fee, rather than paying by the search, had been exhausted.

During FALL SEMESTER 1998 there will be a trial of providing access to numerous specialized FirstSearch® databases from computers anywhere on campus without the need to log on with a password. The databases available are listed on the library's alphabetical and subject WWW listings of "Indexes and Databases" - none are fulltext databases. During and after the trial the usage and feasibility (cost) of the open access will be monitored and evaluated.

Subscriptions to several paper and CD-ROM indexes have been cancelled to increase funding for FirstSearch® (from which online equivalents are available):
  • Religious and Theological Abstracts
  • International Political Science Abstracts
  • PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) Bulletin
  • Bibliography & Index of Geology
  • Sociological Abstracts
  • Microcomputer Abstracts
  • Dissertation Abstracts International
  • Biological & Agricultural Index (CD-ROM)
  • Biography Index
  • Library Literature
  • Book Review Digest
