Where Do I Find Subject Headings?

Subject Headings

  • Start with a search by keyword in your topic area, or by author or title of a known work,  for example "world economy" (Follow this link if you don't know to search by keyword)
  • Once you've found a record for an item that matches what you want, click on its title to display the Item Record
  • In the Item Record, scroll down to the Subject(s) field. This field contains the standardized subject headings for that particular item. For example, a book about the world economy might have international economic relations as a subject heading
  • Click on a subject to automatically search by subject using that subject heading

You may also look up LC subject heading using the Library of Congress Subject Headings volumes available at the reference desk, or ask a reference librarian for help.
