How a Search by Journal Title Works

Person having revelation

Searching by journal title allows you to limit your search to periodical titles. A periodical is something that is published recurrently on a regular basis, e.g. daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually. Periodicals include journals, magazines, newspapers and other publications.

Warning: The Catalog lists all the periodical titles available in print or microform in the Library, but not necessarily all the online title. It cannot search for articles within periodicals.

  • To save time by looking for online and print periodicals together, use the Journal Holdings List.
  • To find periodical articles, use print and online periodical indexes. Online indexes are can be reached from the Find Articles portal page.

When you choose to search by journal title, your search will retrieve only periodicals whose titles begin with the words entered. For example, a search by title for Time would find periodical titles that begin with the word Time, such as Times-Picayune, but not titles that include the word time in a secondary or later position, such as About Time. It would not retrieve books or other non-periodicals titled Time. Doing a Journal Title search makes it easy to find a particular periodical title without having to sort through a larger list that may contain results that you don't want.
