How to Find Something by Call Number on the Shelf

Call numbers are an alphanumeric classification by which an item is shelved. Most Library materials are shelved by call number, including books, government documents and videos. However, some materials are shelved alphabetically by title, such as periodicals and pamphlets. If an item in the Catalog has a call number, write it down along with the location, as both will be needed to find it in the stacks.

Four main classification systems:
Classification Type: Example:
Library of Congress PS3537 .A426 C3 1951
Superintendent of Documents EP 1.23/6:600/R-95/076
Wisconsin State Government UWS Bud 1:
Dewey Decimal 362.292 Rye

The Catalog will alert you with a message if an item is not in its normal location.
