X. Resource Sharing
It is apparent that no library can provide all of the materials needed by its users. It is absolutely necessary to share resources among institutions. The Internet provides convenient access to most library catalogs and national bibliographic databases with location information. This has facilitated interlibrary loan activities. New breakthroughs in networking, improvements in electronic transmission of data make resource sharing a viable alternative.
"Universal Borrowing" enables users to request material from other UW libraries directly without mediation. The vision of making UW libraries and collections into one library one collection becomes a reality. The implementation of ILLiad among UW libraries further improves sharing of document delivery. It enables users to track the status of their interlibrary loan requests online. And users can select to have articles electronically delivered to their desktop.
