Tips for Searching Library Catalogs

Searching for music scores in Andersen Library? Search the Library Catalog
  • The easiest method is a keyword search for [composer last name] and ["title of work"]. If sound recordings are desired, add and "sound recording" to the search (or select that Quick Limit). If scores are wanted, add and score?. Examples:
    • mozart and "cosi fan tutte"
    • mozart and "cosi fan tutte" and "sound recording"
    • mozart and "cosi fan tutte" and score?
  • A desired title may be in a collection of the composer's works. Do a keyword search for [composer last name] and tkey works and (score? or music) not "sound recording", e.g., brahms and tkey works and (score? or music) not "sound recording" Alternatively, first click on the "Set more limits" button and select the "Item Type" of Music Score, then click on the "Set Limits" button. Then do a keyword search for the composer's last name, e.g., mozart and piano.
Collected works of a composer may have a non-English title such as "Samtliche Werke," but catalogs usually add a "uniform title" of "Works" to make it easier to find these sets.
  • Principles of Music Uniform Titles (Matthew M. Wise, New York University)
"Libraries use music uniform titles in their catalog records to uniquely identify and to collocate similar printed and recorded musical works by a composer. Music uniform titles are a device by which musical scores and recordings may be found more easily in a library's catalog. However, if they are to be employed effectively, music uniform titles must be understood by the user of the catalog."
